About Guatemala

Guatemala is a country in Central America bordered by Mexico to the north and west, the Pacific Ocean to the southwest, Belize and the Caribbean Sea to the northeast, and Honduras and El Salvador to the southeast.  The country consists of three main regions the cool highlands with the heaviest population, the tropical area along the Pacific and Caribbean coasts, and the tropical jungle in the northern lowlands known as the Petén.

Guatemala is divided into 22 departments and sub-divided into about 332 municipalities.

CLIMATE
Weather conditions vary from season to season and region to region. There are just two marked seasons, the dry season is from October to early May and the rainy from late May until the end of September. Temperatures vary little during the year. The average high temperature is 77°F and the low 55°F in the highlands.

CLOTHES TO BRING
While in Guatemala City and the highlands area wear spring clothing and a sweater at night. Comfortable walking shoes are suggested. While at archaeological sites and the lowlands, light-colored, lightweight, cotton clothing is recommended. Sunglasses and a hat are recommended while on tours or at the beach.

Antigua Guatemala was the third seat of the capital of the so-called kingdom of Guatemala which included the states of Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica as well as Chiapas, part of Mexico. Was founded on March 10 1543 with the original name of Santiago de los Caballeros of Guatemala.
